JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE NIGHT: CHICAGO

April 22nd, 2008

Congratulations to those who somehow made it, those who fell victim to ingenious or inexhaustible chasers, those who helped out, and to our exalted winner of Journey to the End of the Night: Chicago!

A special thanks to everyone who traveled from afar to play with us on Saturday, and an inexpressibly-extra-special thanks to Dax and his elite team leaders zer0gee and Spidere for putting on such a well-planned, perfectly Chicago, exceptionally magical, wonderfully brutal Journey To The End of the Night (links to previous).

Here's the list of proofs-of-praxis submitted thus far. If you were there on Saturday in a blue ribbon, a red ribbon, or a costume and don't have an SFZero account, please create one, sign up for the event's task, and then submit your proof!

District of Columbia, you're next.

The World Reformed

January 13th, 2008

Welcome to the Era of Insatiability.

A list of changes:

1. You are no longer compelled to join a group. You can do any task in any group as long as you are at the appropriate level. Each time you complete a group task, you gain a rank in that group. You can see your progress in the different groups on your Grouposis page (a link to which appears in your navigation bar). Additionally, you can set your page styling on your account page.

2. There are two new groups, Chrononautic Exxon and the Society For Nihilistic Intent and Disruptive Efforts, each with their own zones of tasks. Thank you to the creators of these groups for adding so much to the game. One more new group is on the way.

3. We have added Teams to the game. You can be a member of multiple teams. Teams can be open enrollment or invite-only. Team discourse (comments) can be either public or private. You can assign praxis to Teams, which will increase your Teams' score.

4. You can set your location using Google Maps instead of US zip codes. Completed Tasks can also be assigned a location on a map. We'll be doing more with this feature in the future, and we encourage everyone to mark the location of their praxis.

5. On each task page, you can express your interest in collaborating on that task.

6. The SFZero History page is on its way, as per the requirements of the Discussion Forum task. We are still ironing out the details.

7. In a late change, the vote points received in previous Eras for Player Photograph will not count towards your Insatiability score. New votes, however, will still be added to your current total.

Like Ender, we have vanquished some nasty bugs. Please let us know if you find others to exterminate.

Glasnost was amazing, and INTERREGNUM was a blast. We know that you'll make Insatiability beautiful too.

Love,
Sam Sean and Ian

P.S. There is an display bug on the Player page that we are currently addressing. It should be fixed soon.

Insatiability

January 12th, 2008

There are 24 hours left of INTERREGNUM, the interruption, the micro-era of discontinuity. And to show for this suspension of the law, we've accumulated a collection of Player Portraits, some pieces of Technotaxidermy (some noir-ish, others a bit harder to classify). Perhaps the new BART Anagram Maps will only be particularly useful to the discerning Situationist, but they, and your advances in artistic materials, seasonal wallet technology, and public seating are a credit to this (barely?) regentless Era. Some of SFZero's ealiest tasks reached new high scores - and some great completions of newer tasks snuck their way in, too.

By how can one reminisce about the present? Insatiability is the future. No one's current score will be spared, and few tasks now active will escape retirement. Group colors will fly where now there is only light BLUE. Technological advances will bring new forms of danger, Trajectories of Desire, modes of tasking, and paths to Praxis.

The big red button will be pressed this very Saturday night at midnight (technically the 13th), and we invite you to join us in commemorating Glasnost, ending the INTERREGNUM, crowning the Interrex, and inaugurating The Era of Insatiability.

To review the details of What Will Happen at midnight, as January 12th becomes the 13th:
- Your current Score will be reduced to whatever points your Player Photograph has earned you, and your Level reduced accordingly. Your past completions won't disappear, and they can still receive votes (which will increase your score for INTERREGNUM - or whatever era the task was submitted under).
- The task list will change. Dramatically.
- SFZero.org will be somewhat different. Groups will return; other structures will debut.
- Last but not least, we'll be at 761 Oak St, in San Francisco (having begun answering the door around 9). We hope you'll join us.

p.s. Your donations this month have not only met, but exceeded our server bill! Thanks everyone, we really appreciate it.

INTERREGNUM

December 31st, 2007

Dear Friends,

As the Iron Curtain falls on Glasnost, we race to contact you with vital information. We must be brief. Insatiability's time has not yet come. It will begin on January 12th at 11:59:59 pm, and will be celebrated with a party in San Francisco at our house. All of you are invited, and we hope to see everyone there.

In the meantime, we present INTERREGNUM: a micro-era of discontinuity, an interruption which incorporates an ineluctable emphasis on a relationship to what comes before and to what follows. In the INTERREGNUM era (as with all new eras) player scores will be reset and group affiliations nullified. For the INTERREGNUM we are also removing all required score, level and group restrictions on tasks. This means that anyone will be able to sign up for any active task. In this time of intercyclical uncertainty, we return to the traditions on which this body politic was founded: we put forward a compilation of the earliest tasks in SFZero. Anyone who completes a task will receive a badge commemorating their participation in the INTERREGNUM. Whomever gets the most points will earn the title of INTERREX.

Coming very soon, Insatiability:

"Life unfolds like an enticing fan, tempting frantic and frenzied youth with its myriad unknown colors of the future and the secrecy of its devilish surprises and mocks those cold-hearted accountants lurking in the still dormant coils of our brains: insanity and death. We unleash ourselves in order to plunge into the boundless distance of the inscrutable night."
-Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz

You made Glasnost an amazing era. Thank you!

Love,
Sam, Sean and Ian

ps.
In the interest of Insatiability, we are delaying our next event until February.

The World Seemed to Be Exploding from Extreme Self-Insatiation

November 16th, 2007

We challenge all comers, all disenfranchised futuristic munitions factory employees, to a tag match of Super Bomberman 5. We will use the brick-kicking kangaroo to trap you with bricks, and destroy you.

...

In other news, in anticipation of Insatiability, two beautifully crafted groups have, at long last, made their public appearance: S.N.I.D.E. and Chrononautic Exxon.

In addition, two duels are currently in progress. The Forbes and Smith campaigns are grappling to be our first International Senator, while The Vixen and Burn Unit prepare to competitively Revive The Oral Tradition.

Finally, if anyone reading this works for Apple, please fix Sam's wireless problem so he can stop snorting Zoloft and crying all the time.

Love,

The SFZero Daemon

P.S. Zany's party tomorrow night at Pier 54.5, between Jelly's and Kelly's Mission Rock. Terry A. Francois Boulevard will be relevant. You are invited.

P.P.S. The pie fight made the front page of the Chronicle today. They mention SFZero. Sam is wildly misquoted.

Insatiability

Glorious citizens of SFZero:

The Glasnost Era will end on December 31, 2007 at midnight. On January 1, 2008, at 12:01 am, a new era will dawn: Insatiability. The Era of Insatiability brings new features, and will erupt into the universe with a spectacular event.

The Glasnost Era continues to be a time of social change and revolutionary freedom. Let the coming months be a fitting culmination of all that it represents!

SFZero: Temporarily with 100% more contextual advertising!

September 27th, 2007

So what happened? We have some theories:

1. Just making sure you're paying attention / took the no-money and ran / testing the rabbit hole for a mind-blowing ARG about SFZero itself being kidnapped.
2. Our server was seized as part of an investigation into a complex money laundering scheme involving triple derivatives on the outcome of ping-pong matches. Ian has entered a plea of "not guilty".
3. Our domain registration ran off either with, or in search of, Lola. Its prompt return hopefully bodes well for the safety of la poulet.
4. Villainy?
5. We trusted a Sicilian (see below).

In any case, there are some new tasks with a few more on the way tonight, a range of events coming up, bus stop raves in the student news, and - at long last - another front-page video clip:

And yes, it would appear Lowtek lured Burn Unit into a land war in Asia.

THE BATTLE OF WITS

September 3rd, 2007

It's Duelin' time! The Sultan of San Francisco, LOWTECK, in the midst of a political campaign, and The Master of Minneappolis, BURN UNIT, are engaged in an Office Arms Race due to end tonight at 2am.

COMPLETIONS: LOWTEK / BURN UNIT
Weigh your vote carefully!
